All hail Serena, this week’s FU Muse!
I love tennis. I never played when I was a kid, beyond lessons at the park district. I got really into it, especially the Grand Slams, when I was in high school. My parents were often surprised, shocked really, when I would get up early to watch Breakfast at Wimbledon on HBO.
I marveled at the likes of Agassi and Sampras and Courier and Chang. I liked watching wunderkind, Jennifer Capriati, and really saw a kindred spirit in Monica Seles. Then, the earth shook as the Williams sisters from Compton entered the mix with a splash. Obsessed.
Serena, especially, has been such an inspiration. Her strength, power, and confidence are rivaled only by her incredible vulnerability. Her adventure of becoming a Mom has left me awestruck. And, her “comeback” has made me cheering for her. So hard. It really pisses me off that her ranking was not protected. It’s just another barrier that she’s had to overhead smash, hopefully making it easier for the next woman.
This week, she’s again making a statement at the US Open. Amidst the announcement that her badass catsuit has been banned at the French Open, she’s come out in designer tutus that cut a strong contrast. In my head, she’s saying, “Dress me in whatever you’d like. I’ll still kick your ass!”. I mean, you can take away a superhero’s costume, but that won’t take away their super powers!
The bottom line is that this woman stands in her power…no matter what she’s wearing. No distraction. No tantrum. She just shows up and makes the statement in her dominating performance. Last night she finished her match like, Ace, Ace, TWIRL.
We can’t all be the greatest athlete in our sport, but we totally shine brightly in our lives. We can stand in our power and show up in a way that works for us. We can inspire simply by being ourselves. That’s what unicorns do!
Cheers to Serena. Long live the Queen!
